Consequences Of Getting A DUI In Tennessee

The state of Tennessee takes drunk driving very seriously, which means that if you are convicted of a DUI, you will potentially be subject to harsh legal consequences.

If it was a first offense, you may face anywhere from two days to nearly a year in jail (depending on your blood alcohol level and various other factors related to your case). Your license could be suspended or revoked for a period of one year or longer. You may have to participate in an alcohol treatment program, have an ignition interlock device installed on your vehicle at your own expense, and/or pay a fine of anywhere from $350 to $1,500 to the state. You may have to pay for bail, the towing of your vehicle, various court fees, and more. Your insurance will likely go up in price. If you did damage any property or cause injury to anyone, you could be required to pay restitution.

If it was your second, third, or other repeat offense, you may face anywhere from 45 days to 120 days in jail. Your license could be suspended or revoked from two to six years. You may have to pay a larger fine, between $3,500 to $10,000, and attend a victim impact panel or perform mandatory community service on top of everything else.

If you did cause injury to anyone, or caused a crash that resulted in someone’s death, then you may be charged with additional crimes and subject to even more criminal penalties that could include years in jail or more.

Why Having Good Legal Representation Matters

Having a Nashville DUI lawyer on your side whom you can trust matters because the stakes are so high. It’s your freedom and your finances at stake. It’s your relationship with your significant other, with your family, with your friends, in the community. It’s your current employment, and future career prospects. It’s your living situation and future living prospects. It’s your reputation on the line. It’s your self-esteem, and your peace of mind.

Without an aggressive attorney to fight for those things, you run a much higher risk of losing them. An attorney can explain the law in a manner you can easily understand and explain what options are available to you. They can answer all your questions, investigate your arrest to look for possible errors or inadmissible evidence, build a strong case for your charges to be dismissed or reduced, attend hearings on your behalf, and ultimately pursue an outcome that will preserve your rights and your record.
